Managing Failure

Updated: Jan 24, 2019

“Failure is more common than Success. Poverty more prevalent than Wealth. Disappointment more normal than Arrival" - J.Wallace Hamilton

A fear of failure, potential or past tense, is not the step backwards that we typically understand it to be, rather it is the opportunity to step forward, recognise, measure, apply and reflect.

It is to move beyond our boundary of understanding and stretch our mindset into that which we do not yet know. In essence it is to use knowledge and experience to create a new parameter and move out of an existing limitation.

The upside is that failure presents opportunity:

Benchmarking. Measuring. Identifying triggers. Identifying attributes. Embracing opportunities. Championing small wins.

All make the difference in the long term. There is no short term 'fountain of youth'

A fear of failure falls into our own innate fear of not being good enough, otherwise known as fear of being found out and may relate to a deep fear of not belonging. This is not to make a mistake or failure some deep and meaningful realisation, although in essence it is; rather it is to realise that we are in a position of empowerment where we move toward seeking growth and not the assumption that we messed up and are not growing.
